Take Time To Connect To What You Want

So, HAPPY 2017 to you! Are you all prepared for a New Year ahead, done all your year’s planning with quarterly targets? No, me neither. And I won’t be doing that kind of planning. I have started MY kind of planning, which involves digging deep into what I want for my life, and mulling and pondering and ruminating and asking myself LOADS of questions to release 2016 and prepare for 2017.

When I’m done, I’ll have a guiding Vision for the year ahead, something to help me stay on track and keep moving towards what I really want, rather than getting distracted by what I think I vaguely want. When I started my visioning questions, I noticed myself doing something clients do a LOT…something that really doesn’t help to get the answers and enjoy the process.

After giving the question half a second’s thought, my mind would go blank and I’d think…

I don’t know!

And panic. Which would make my mind blank even further, and I’d mutter to myself that the question “what do I want?” is just too damn hard.

It’s not hard, it just needs more than 1/2 a second’s thought!

Our dreams and desires often lay buried under lots of shoulds and musts and cants and rubble. We need more than 1/2 a second to find them! It’s like I say about clearing the creative pipeline – you have to let the “I don’t knows” and shitty ideas out to get to the golden ideas hiding at the back!

It’s the same with our dreams and desires (and it’s why I ask so many questions to get at those desires) – we need to give ourselves the gift of time to connect with what we want. It’s no use just giving it 1/2 a second’s thought, then giving up. You need to give yourself the time to mull and ponder and tap into the wellspring of desire.

You might not get it immediately. You might need a few different questions to get to the gold…but it’s worth taking the time for. And to be honest, when I did this the other day, it took just a minute or two of mulling until I tapped into the energy of desire and thought “yes, I want this and this and this and this…”

Once you tap in, it becomes much easier to keep the flow going…until you hit another “I don’t know”. But rather than accepting that first answer and giving up, stay with it. What’s behind ‘I don’t know’? Give yourself more than a few seconds to think about it! Give yourself a chance.

As I mentioned, clients do this a lot. If they don’t know the answer instantly, they panic, and you can almost feel their mind shy away from the question, deciding it’s just too hard! My advice is always the same:

Relax. Breathe. Give yourself more than 1/2 a second to consider the answer.

And usually within a minute, answers start to come.

Don’t bark at yourself like an irritable, impatient boss. Ask the question, then give yourself a chance to find the answer! Connecting with what you want for the year (or your life) ahead is worth taking more than 1/2 a second on, don’t you think?! And I don’t mean take days and weeks and months on it – so far, I’ve done about an hour over 6 days, and I’ll probably spend another couple of hours over the next week.

So when I say “take time time”, I don’t mean “wait until you have 3 days free for yearly visioning”, I mean “give it more than 1/2 a second”! Getting in touch with your wants and desires is so much fun, and you and your life deserve to take a bit of time to moodle and mull and ponder and ruminate on what you want for the year ahead!
