never getting started

Obstacle Busting: Never Getting Started and Not Taking Action

Aah, the joys of a dream, what fun to imagine living on that beach, writing that book, creating that business, moving to the farm in the country. Such fun to imagine what we want in life…but then, turning the romantic ideal into reality…suddenly it feels like work. Or we don’t know what to do. Or it seems too big. Or impossible. Or we don’t have time or money or space or support. So many things can get in the way of the dream…it’s no wonder so many of us never seem to get started or take any action.

So, if you’re struggling with this one, please know that you are not alone. Most people who take this big dream journey at some point find themselves never getting started or just not taking the action. One easy way to ‘get started’ is to find the feeling behind what you want, and do what you can to feel that feeling now. So if you want the farm in the country for the freedom and connection to nature, what can you do today to feel free, how can you connect to nature? Examples: dance like no one is watching; change your routine; listen to the birds sing; watch the sun set.

We want most things because we think they will make us happy. So what can you do to make you happy today, what would be fun, what would bring you joy? Get happy. It’s way easier to get started and to take action when you’re feeling good, so make feeling good a high priority. And why wait until you get your dream before you start feeling happy and enjoying your life? Enjoy the journey, even if you don’t feel like you’re making much progress to the destination!

Then do something, anything. Start anywhere. Take one action. It doesn’t have to be a big action. In fact, it’s probably easier if you make it a teeny, tiny, easy baby step. Don’t get paralysed by indecision, just pick something to do and do it. Don’t worry about it being a ‘good’ action, a ‘right’ action, a ‘perfect’ action…just do something, anything. It really doesn’t matter what you do, what matters is that you do something.

Often when you start moving, you’ll keep moving…imagine a ball rolling down a hill. But if you still feel like you’re not getting started or taking action; or you keep stalling after a little start or a little action, explore what’s behind the inertia. Not getting started or not taking action are often symptoms of a different obstacle – perhaps a fear, perhaps not wanting what you thought you wanted, perhaps an issue of time or money or not knowing what to do.

Take some time to consider what’s really going on, what’s getting in the way. And don’t panic about this – there could be 15 obstacles stopping you getting started or stopping you taking action…but all of them are fixable. You can get over, under, round or through them all. Also most of the time, busting past one obstacle makes the others easier to bust past…or they might all just fall down. Imagine knocking down a wall – you don’t have to hit every single brick…just start whacking with the sledgehammer and you’ll find that one brick will take several others with it.

Whatever you do, keep doing something. Find a place to begin, and after every action, ask yourself what’s next, what’s next, what’s next? An object in motion tends to stay in motion. An object at rest tends to stay at rest. So keep moving. I’m not suggesting you run around like a headless chicken (this also is not helpful), but take inspired action. Dig deep into your inner wisdom and higher guidance, ask for inspiration as to what to do. Then go do it. Over and over again. Action is magic.
