Top Ten Tips for making your life better
1. Keep a gratitude journal – Every day, write down at least 5 things you are grateful for. This helps you start to realise just how lucky you are, and how fantastic your life is. If you struggle to think of things, here’s a few ideas – I am grateful that I am alive, I have a roof over my head, I have work, I have great friends, I have food in my belly, I have good health, I have the freedom to say and do what I want (there are countries where this is not possible), I am loved, I have potential, I have great support…I could go on. Remember people who are not as fortunate as you, and start counting your blessings.
2. Keep an acknowledgements journal – Every day, write down at least 5 things you can acknowledge yourself for – things you are pleased or proud to have done. These can be very small things – imagine you have a little cheerleader following you round all day saying ‘well done for doing the housework… well done for getting up when you didn’t want to…well done for being nice to your friend …well done for taking care of yourself’. This is a fantastic exercise for raising your self confidence, self belief and self esteem because you start to realise just how much you do every day. Instead of remembering everything you’ve f’ed up all day long, take 5 minutes to look at what you’ve done well.
3. Set your intentions for the day – Every day, start off by setting positive intentions for the day. For example, ‘To positively impact everyone I meet, to complete my work with ease and joy, to take excellent care of myself all day’. Positive intentions will start your day off well, and keep it going well all day.
4. 50 things that bug you – Have some real fun with this one and list 50 things that get on your nerves – they can be small things, like an empty coffee cup on your desk, to large things, like hating your job. (It’s a great exercise to do when you have PMT!) Now you’ve got 50 things listed, make a comittment to doing something about one item every day. It’s a good idea to start with small things that you can do something about easily, then move onto the larger stuff…and remember that the key here is to ‘do something’ – so if it’s something big, like hating your job, a little action you could take is to go to work with a positive intention for your working day. As you start to work on your ‘bugs’ list, you will notice that your energy starts to clear, and life just starts getting better…
5. 50 things you love doing – Another one to have fun with – list 50 things that you just love doing – this again can be big things, like travelling, or small things, like eating chocolate. Once you have your list of 50, make a committment to yourself to do at least one of these things every day…then 2 …then 3 and so on. You will find that the more you do, the better your days become.
6. Keep an ‘ideal day’ journal – This is another FUN one. The idea is to keep a daily journal of how your day would have gone if it had gone perfectly. It is up to you how close to your current life you stay – I tend to swing between a day walking on the cliffs in Sydney (not too close to my current reality!) to having ‘real’ things that happened, only better. Keep it light, easy and fun. I just write one page every day (my writing is huge, so it’s probably half a page in anyone else’s writing!) and I LOVE this exercise – it’s the perfect way to finish my ideal day. And it is a great feeling when you write in your ideal day diary a day that really happened!
7. Your fabulous vision – Do you know what you would like your life to be like? Do you know what would fill you with joy? If I were able to wave a magic wand, what would you wish for? What would make you go ‘wow!’? When you write a fabulous vision for how you would love your life to be, and read it regularly, you are filled with the energy you need to move towards your most fantastic life.
8. Extreme Self Care – If your life purpose was to take care of yourself, what would change in your life? Here’s the thing – if you take great care of yourself, you are in a better position to take care of everyone else in your life, to do your job well, to be healthy, to have a great life! So why don’t we do it?! If you were going to take care of yourself today, what would you do? What do you need? Start putting yourself first right now.
9. Questions to ask yourself – Are you consistently asking yourself what you are doing wrong? Our brains are marvelous things, when we ask them a question, they will go away and look for the answer. So if you are asking yourself why you are an idiot, your brain will go and find the answer to that question! So, you want to be asking yourself high quality questions…here are a few of my favourites. What would I love to do right now? What am I doing right? What is fantastic about me? What is the best step I can take in this situation? What is the win/win solution? What is best for me? How can I take better care of myself? How can I make this easier? Pick one of these questions and start asking yourself every day for the answers.
10. The 1% rule – Imagine this, if something in your life changed by 1% every day, within 4 months you would see over 100% change. Interesting isn’t it? So, what in your life do you want to change? And what 1% small changes can you make? Every day, ask yourself, what is the 1% change I can make today. Allow yourself to make difficult changes in an easy, fun way. Dramatic change does not have to mean dramatic action. Small, consistent steps will take you much further than sprinting (and running out of steam!).
