Reflect Upon Your Blessings

…Reflect upon your blessings, of which every man has plenty, not on your past misfortunes, of which all men have some… – Charles Dickens
Do you spend more time reflecting on what a shame it is for you or on how lucky you are to have plentiful, running water; to have enough food to live; to have so many possessions you desperately need to clear clutter; to have access to any kind of education at all; to be able to express your opinion without being in fear of your life; for the air you breathe; for the sunshine; for spring flowers?
I could go on forever. Of course life is not perfect, but it’s a heck of a lot better than we give it credit for!

What Can You Give?
This week I have been asking what your theme will be for this year, what you want for this year, today I want to ask what you will give? My theme for 2009 is service – giving to the world. People who know me and check out my website for the first time are often astonished by how much I give away, but I know that giving feels good! Whenever I am feeling low, I look for a way that I can make a difference to someone else.
It makes me feel good, hopefully makes them feel good, reminds me that I am a valuable and wonderful human being, and I know of nothing better to dispel a low mood! Sometimes we can get so focused on what we want to get in our own lives, we forget to restore the balance by giving. And as giving feels so good, it’s a good idea to regularly get out of our longing and into contributing as often as we can.
So, what can you give in 2009? It could be your money, time, love, expertise, or ideas. Give with love, and enjoy your giving. Oh, and if there is anything I can give you, let me know.

Stand Out Moments of 2008
What were your Stand Out Moments of 2008? What is the event that sticks out in your mind? What film got your attention this year? What song have you not been able to get out of your head this year?
My stand out moment has to be at the V festival. Standing ankle deep in mud, being rained on (in August), arms in the air singing along to Muse and completely oblivious to the rain, mud, cold (in August). “Best, you’ve got to be the best you’ve got to change the world and use this chance to be heard your time is now” What a moment.
The stand out film of the year for me was Mamma Mia! Yes, I know it’s cheesy, but I LOVED this film SO much. Despite thinking for the first 5 minutes that I was going to hate it, it is already up there in my top 5 films of all time – the ultimate chick flick, ultimate feel good film, and once again proving that Julie Walters is one of the greatest comic actresses around.
Stand out songs was a bit more problematic…there’s been a lot of good music this year (and a lot of “please God make it stop” music). I couldn’t pick one alone, so these are the 3 songs that literally stopped me in my tracks the first time I heard them: “Love is Noise” by the Verve; “Use Somebody” by Kings of Leon; and “One Day Like This” by Elbow.
I could now go on to the ‘worst’ list…but you know what? I much prefer to walk on the sunny side of the street! I’d love to hear what your stand out moments, songs and films were this year, so please leave me a comment and let me know!

Classical Music With Shining Eyes
Tears, laughter, chopin, buttocks and shining eyes – what more can you ask for in a talk? A friend of mine directed me to this video, and it totally took my breath away! Enjoy…and let me know what you think!
