The Best Financial Advice You Will Ever Receive

An Excerpt from “110 Ways to Heal Your Money” by Donna Higton – remember this is available at half price until 7th April with the code HH33V. Tell your friends. :-)

So, what’s this ‘best advice’ then?

Spend less than you earn.

Simple eh? So why on earth are so many of us in trouble financially? Simply because we don’t take this advice. Instead we believe the advertising that tells us to have happiness, we need a big television, 2000 DVD’s, weekends in exotic locations, gadgets, shoes, clothes, books, and so on. But have any of these purchases actually made you feel better in the long term? (I know about the rush that comes from buying a pair of shoes I don’t need and won’t wear – that high is VERY short lived, then I just feel naughty.)

Have you ever gone into debt to buy something and then found that your desire for that ‘must-have’ item is replaced almost instantly with another desire for a ‘must-have’ item? I watched a program about a young lady in a large amount of debt because of her desire for designer handbags…which she never used, never even looked at – they sat in a cupboard where she couldn’t see them because they made her feel bad about the debt she was in.

This is insane. Frankly, if I’m going to spend £4000 on a bag, I would want to use it constantly. It’s a common insanity – I used to buy all sorts of junk I didn’t use. I managed to wean myself off buying junk by saving for it – it’s amazing how often a ‘must-have’ item is no longer a ‘must-have’ at all when you’ve spent 3 months saving up for it. This technique also helped me to see when I was buying things and not enjoying them. When it’s on credit, somehow you ignore that little dissatisfaction…but when it’s come directly from your savings, you can really see how actually it was not worth it.

People have said to me “But I deserve the very best in life.” YES, I agree, you do. You deserve the best from yourself. You deserve to be able to enjoy the money you earn. You deserve to be free of the ball and chain of debt. You deserve to feel secure. You deserve to be able to open your bills without fear. You deserve to live a stress-free life. You deserve to have confidence in your own worth – whether you are dripping in diamonds or not. You deserve to be the very best you that you can possibly be. How can you be your best you when you are weighed down by debt, fear, stress and shame?

On a St Patrick’s Day card I received:

“Whenever there is happiness, hope you’ll be there too
Wherever there are friendly smiles, hope they’ll smile on you
Whenever there is sunshine, hope it shines especially for you
To make each day for you as bright as it can be.”

Happy Tuesday!

Don’t Let That Stop You

March 28, 2010 by Donnaonthebeach

Whenever we are moving towards something we want, a goal or a dream, obstacles appear in our path. Some of the obstacles come from the outer world – circumstances, people or physical, some from ourselves – lack of self-belief, crises of confidence, doubt. But these obstacles are not unusual, they are not road-blocks, and they cannot stop you – unless you let them.

Ok, sometimes an obstacle really does stop you in your tracks, sometimes there is even a reason for us to be stopped, a different direction to go in. But more often, it is just an obstacle to get around. For example, I have a fabulous teleclass series I am planning to deliver – my next step is to test the teleclass lines and learn to use the technology. Unfortunately for the last 2 days I have been unable to get through to either of the services I am signed up for.

It’s a nuisance, but it’s not going to stop me. In fact, I’m quite glad, because if I was already running the teleclass series I’d be in a mess – unable to get on the line! I don’t know yet what the answer is – perhaps a different day, a different service, a webinar instead of a teleclass, a radio show instead, a download, a podcast….who knows? (if you do, please get in touch!)

Whatever your obstacle, look to go around, above, beneath, through if you have to…but don’t let it stop you. Of course, if you then run up against 1000 other obstacles, start considering that there might be a better way or a better direction for you…but don’t expect your path to be totally smooth. It just appears to be smooth when you just breeze on past your obstacles. Now, to this issue of the teleclass…

Let me know what obstacles you are overcoming today.

An Easier Way to ‘Get It Done’

March 23, 2010 by Donnaonthebeach

I received this e-mail from Abraham-Hicks yesterday:

If there is something that you have to do, resist the temptation to do it under duress. Ask yourself, “What’s the worst thing that would happen if I didn’t do this?” And if you can get away with not doing it at all, don’t do it. And then imagine what would it feel like to have this done. Spend a day or two, if you can, just 15 minutes here, 5 minutes here, 2 minutes here, here and here, imagining it completed in a way that pleases you! And then, the next time you decide that you’re going to take action about it, the action is going to be a whole lot easier.

— Abraham

Try it – let inspiration pull you forward instead of trying to push yourself to do everything. Put the time in to picture it done, then see how much easier it is to do it. Let me know how you get on!

Jazz Up Your To-Do List With Some Rewards

March 16, 2010 by Donnaonthebeach
Filed under Blog posts, Donna's Life

This week, my coach Sandy Grason gave me the homework to celebrate the baby steps – celebrate how much I’m getting done, celebrate how faabulous I am. Now, I’ll be honest with you – I am rubbish at this. I usually reward a job well done with more work to do. As you can imagine, this creates exhaustion, overwhelm and a forever sense of too much too do, too little time. Not to mention NO appreciation for my hard work.

So I thought about it, I thought about me, and knowing me as I do, I decided to find a way to incorporate this celebration into the day so I would actually do it. There’s no point leaving it til I finish work, as by then I’m ready to collapse in a heap and don’t have time for my treat. So I have a new “To-Do” list. For every item on that list, I have a ‘reward’, a celebration for having done it, for being fabulous, for achieving. Most of these rewards and celebrations are small…and some of them are things I would do anyway.

But it makes a difference when you intentionally reward yourself for a job well done. I even found myself doing a task I’d been procrastinating just to get the chocolate orange biscuit that was my reward! And I am working more efficiently too, because rather than going from task to task endlessly and getting less and less enthused, after each task completed, I have a little treat – I play a favourite song, I do something fun, I read a magazine for 5 minutes, I go outside and get some air for a couple of minutes, I play mah-jong or spider solitaire, I go on facebook, I sing…and so on.

These little rewards keep me pepped up and energised to move onto the next task. So why don’t you try jazzing up your to-do list with some rewards? If you work for someone else, you might have to think a bit more creatively, but this can still be done. Even rewarding yourself by taking a moment to stretch will help you keep your energy up. And this idea is so important because so many of us rush from task to task, never appreciating how much we get done, how much we achieve on a daily basis…and after a while, that just gets depressing!

So at work, and at home, reward yourself for jobs well done. Make a list of things you love and start using them to reward yourself. Make a star chart, like the kids get – why should they be the only ones getting stars?! Have some fun…and most of all, reward yourself for all the mini-steps you take throughout the day. You’re worth it. I’d love to hear your thoughts on this – leave me a comment and tell me how you are going to reward yourself!

A Mission Statement to Love

March 15, 2010 by Donnaonthebeach

In Amanda Alexander’s “Inspire” newsletter today, she shared the principles underpinning the mission statement of her son’s school, and I just LOVE this!

“If something works we do more of it. If it doesn’t, we do something different

We create opportunities for “magic moments”

We celebrate today and are excited by our future

We work as a T.E.A.M to enhance change (T.E.A.M stands for Together Everyone Achieves More)”

Now this is something I could live by – do more of what works, have magic moments, celebrate today and get excited, and work with others to achieve more. Can you think how you can incorporate this in your life?

Your Imperfections are So Beautiful

March 11, 2010 by Donnaonthebeach

There is a song by British indie band The Tears – here’s a snippet of the lyric:
“Your imperfections are so beautiful
I can’t control my animal soul
Your imperfection has got me on a chain
Can’t concentrate
I’m a sucker for your beautiful mistakes

Your imperfections make you what you are
My defective star
My inelegant love”

I love the whole thing. I always resonate so much more with people who allow themselves to be vulnerable, to be real, to be perfectly imperfect…to be HUMAN! My old coach used to say to me, whenever I admitted an imperfection “OHMIGOD YOU’RE HUMAN?!?!?!?” Lol. Yes we are. Human. Allowed to be rubbish! Allowed to have a bad day. And our imperfections make us who we are…

Part of our unique essence comes from our imperfections, just as part comes from our gifts. One without the other is wierd. I personally don’t know any perfect people. I know some people who try to be perfect, and deny or suppress or hide their imperfections. I’ve done it myself at times. And it is painful. Because when you start denying parts of you, it is like cutting off a limb. And why? To appear perfect?

You ask me, flaws are more perfect. Because they are real. Don’t worry about being ‘perfect’. Instead focus on being YOU. All of you. Imperfections and all. Authentic, real…and therefore attractive, magnetic, beautiful, a shining star. And while you’re at it, why not look for the wonderful in the flawed. For example, I am lazy…which means I get to read lots of good books and sit in the garden in the sunshine a lot. This is a good thing! I am also quite a grump at times…which means that I rarely get taken for a mug because I’m just too arsey!!

I could tell you for HOURS what imperfections I have and why they’re great (I’m stubborn as a mule, which make me persistent; I’m really flaky at times, which makes me multi-passionate and creative; I eat too much junk food, which gives me lots of padding for winter!) but I won’t go on about how perfectly imperfect I am! I want to hear about you. What beautiful imperfections do you have…and what is GOOD about them?

Share your thoughts, leave me a comment or contact me through the website and let me know, and if you’re not sure what is good about YOUR imperfection, share it anyway!
