Of Claustrophobic fidgets
September 29, 2009 by Donnaonthebeach
Hi guys! How are you all doing? I hope all is well. Apologies for being absent for a wee while – I had a week off last week, and now I have a ‘tingling’ sensation in my body which makes it quite uncomfortable to type! Yuk. Just waiting for an MRI scan to figure out what’s going on…ho hum. Looking forward to that. NOT– being a claustrophobic fidget is apparently not a good thing for an MRI scan. Boo. Anyway, unless the sensation eases, or I find a voice recognition program, there will only be short blogs this week – but it’s a good time to make sure you’re following me on Twitter – http://www.twitter.com/donnaonthebeach so you get your daily dose of beachiness!
Wish me luck!

PS My appointment came through…for the 24th October! Oh joy. So I have another month of this rubbish wierdness. Not happy. Make that short blogs for the next month!

If You Could See Me Now – Recommendation

If you’ve been following this blog for a while, you will know that I haven’t done a book recommendation for ages – largely because I normally only reccommend personal development books and I haven’t read anything ‘AMAZING’ for a while (lots of good stuff, but nothing astounding I just had to share).
But I must recommend Cecilia Ahern’s “If You Could See Me Now” – this has taken over as my favourite book of all time! Now, just in case you are a cyncial, intellectual snob (!) I will say this: it is a fluffy, lovely, girls book. It’s a romance (not mills&boon), it’s a fantasy (not Lord of the Rings), it’s imaginative, it’s ‘odd’, it’s kooky…and it’s wonderful. It’s probably not for everybody, but I love it and I think you might too…so check it out!

To Do: Something Fun
September 16, 2009 by Donnaonthebeach
Take a look at your ‘to-do’ list – does it have anything fun on it? Does it have ’sing at the top of your lungs’ or ‘phone my best friend’ or ’spin until I’m dizzy’ or ‘dance like a loon’ or ‘laugh til your sides hurt’? No? Didn’t think so.
To-do lists are great – I love a ‘to-do’ list…especially if I’m actually ticking things off said to-do list. But the trouble is that they are all too often boring, uninspiring, hard work and make us feel bad. On my to do list for a few months has been ‘do my tax return’. Ugh. B-o-r-i-n-g! Lol – it will get done soon, but I know that it will be on a day when I’ve done some fun stuff and I’m inspired to fly through it (I keep doing bits, this last bit will probably take 2 hours in total).
See, not only is fun stuff fun (!), it also gives us energy and inspiration and joy and good feelings that help us to fly through the slightly less enjoyable stuff with a big smile and a flourish, instead of a big sigh and a mopey face!
So, add to your to-do list something fun…and let me know what it is cos it might be so much fun that I do it myself too!

What Are You Leaving Behind?
September 15, 2009 by Donnaonthebeach
Think about the last 24 hours of your life – where have you been? What did you leave behind? For example, I visited my yoga teacher and left behind a bag of damsons (which was a good thing!). I met friends in the pub and left laughter (because I was so tired I thought someone’s t-shirt said “bee taster”…it was actually “beer taster” D’oh!). I went to the shop and left money and a smile.
I think I have mostly left every part of my world better because I was in it this last 24 hours. That’s not always the case. Sometimes I can leave behind sarcasm, irritation, mess! But if I think about it, I’d rather leave the world a better place behind me than a trashed, insulted, shouted at and hurt. How about you?

You Say “You’re a Flake” Like it’s a Bad Thing
September 14, 2009 by Donnaonthebeach
Filed under Blog posts, Donna's Life
One of my friends was telling me recently that I am ’such a flake’ – it wasn’t meant as a compliment apparently! Is that anything like you? You get really super enthused about an idea, follow it a little, then get bored/find out it’s not for you/lose interest. Ten minutes later you have another marvelous idea which follows the same pattern. Another hare-brained scheme. Another uncompleted idea. Another “failure”.
And this is a problem why? If it was not for creative, entreprenurial, mercurial, tenacious, stubborn, flighty, flaky people, we would all still be sitting in the dark on a stone floor with no entertainment. Yes, yes, the ability to follow an idea through to completion is good, and if you are one of those lucky folk who knows from the age of 15 what you wish to do with the next 80 years of your life, good for you.
But for the rest of us, being flaky is no bad thing. It is fun. It means that we become very courageous – always trying new things. It builds our confidence. It leads us down paths that many people who stay on the signposted path fail to find. It brings us joy. It makes us interesting. It opens our minds. It broadens our horizons. It potentially brings us to our ‘one path’ (not that I believe in that, but that’s another blog for another day!).
Most great inventors will have had friends and family who poo-poo’d their ideas, told them they were wasting their time and should get ‘a proper job’ and stop trying to invent nuts-o things like light bulbs and tv and blogs. Thankfully they didn’t listen. And nor shall I! My friend, I love you and I really don’t care that you think I’m a flake – I just want you to realise that it is a GOOD thing!

Hoist Your Sails and Catch the Wind!

From the universe yesterday:
You don’t take “baby steps” for the distance they cover, Donna, but to put yourself within reach of life’s magic.
Just like you don’t hoist your sails to move the boat, but to put yourself within reach of the wind.
Hoist, baby, hoist, baby, 1, 2, 3, 4 –
The Universe
This weekend, hoist your sails and catch the wind!

Is Pushing Yourself Good?
September 10, 2009 by Donnaonthebeach
Filed under Blog posts, Donna's Life
So this week I’ve been a little lacking in enthusiasm for the idea of doing work-type things. Talking to clients is no problem, clearing e-mails goes ok, then I get to the marketing/admin/taxes bit and I’m looking for distractions – twitter, facebook, damson picking, dog-walking, tidying up, even going for a beer with my dad on his day off! I thought it was because I was tired the last couple of days so I didn’t really stress about it. But I’m not tired today…and I’m still not that enthused! Hmm.
Now our usual response to this is to just push ourselves to carry on and ‘do’ something, anything, busy-work. I am in the lucky position of working for myself so I don’t have to ‘push’…and I notice that if I do, I still don’t get anything done anyway!! At least nothing usable! I write stuff that’s rubbish and doesn’t get used, it takes 12 times as long to complete any task, and it’s accompanied by lots of aggravated sighing! Lol.
Pointless, I think you will agree. So I’ve just been thinking ‘what would be a better plan?’ Because that’s just a waste of time. Especially as when I am enthused I can get 5 times more done in less time. So I asked myself what would I like to do right now. And it’s not sit at my desk (funnily enough!). See I think, rather than ‘push’ myself, if I can bring myself into enthusiasm by doing something I actually want to do, I’ll get more done.
It will also be more enjoyable. I know that some of us don’t have the luxury of doing whatever we want whenever we want (and if I could, I’d be on a beach in the caribbean!), but we can look at our reluctance to ‘do’ with less judgemental eyes, and just see if there’s a better way. So, if you’ll excuse me, I’m going to take my tax paperwork, my Bob Marley CD and myself outside in the sunshine!

Honest as the Day is Long
September 9, 2009 by Donnaonthebeach
I was talking to a friend today about honesty, and some people’s inability to be honest! Then I noticed that my affirmation for the day was “I communicate clearly and honestly. People can trust that what I say is true.” Nothing like a bit of reinforcement to entertain a person. The thing with dishonesty is that not only do other people not trust you, you don’t even trust yourself! And you become a fraction of your real self, because you are hiding behind a mask of dishonesty.
Honesty doesn’t have to be hurtful! I am very rarely offensive when I am being honest, because I do have some skill in tact and diplomacy! Most people like directness, most people prefer the straightforward approach…and most of us HATE to be lied to! So, be honest – are you being honest with yourself? Are you being honest in your dealings with others? Are you being honest about who you are?
If not, you’re wasting energy and hiding your brilliance. So think about it – be honest at least with yourself, and allow yourself to be who you really are.

Practically Perfect In Every Way
September 3, 2009 by Donnaonthebeach

As usual, the Bank Holiday brought with it rubbish TV. My favourite by far was one of these dreadful and pointless 100 greatest lists. It was the 100 greatest family films of all time. And I realised that this is my favourite genre by far! I watched most of the top 40 with a cheesy grin – I own most of them, the Jungle Book, Lord of the Rings, Pirates of the Caribean etc. In fact, of the ones I saw on the list, there was only one I hadn’t seen. Edward Scissorhands. Most remiss of me!
Anyway, somewhere near the top was the genius of Mary Poppins…which got me thinking about being practically perfect in every way. Is this an ideal that you are trying to live up to? Perhaps not to be Mary Poppins, but to be the perfect businesswoman/man, the perfect mom/dad, the perfect person – with the best social life, best job, best car, best tv, best friends, best body? The truth is that practically perfect people don’t exist and the sooner you realise that perfection is an impossible idea, the sooner you can get on with being imperfect and enjoying it!
