OnTheBeach – Pieces of a Puzzle
November 28, 2008 by Donnaonthebeach
A short and sweet one this week as the week has run away with me! In fact, I think the year has run away with me. How did it get to be November already?! And on a completely random note, for years I couldn’t say ‘jigsaw’ so I called it a ‘jinksaw’.
Pieces of the Jigsaw
“There are no extra pieces in the universe. Everyone is here because he or she has a place to fill, and every piece must fit itself into the big jigsaw puzzle.” Deepak Chopra
You are an important piece of the grand puzzle – do you own that? Do you live that? Do you see how amazing, how beautiful, how wonderful you are? Or if something is currently darkening your brilliance (lack of self-belief, fear, feeling directionless), do you see how amazing, how beautiful, how wonderful you are? I can see the wonder of you from here…I hope you see it when you look in the mirror!
Something to play with
Own your own magnificence – own that you are a part of the grand puzzle, an important part. What can you do this week to show your faith in your importance?

Stop Looking At What You Ain’t Got
November 27, 2008 by Donnaonthebeach
I had a vague thought in the back of my mind to write something about thankfulness and gratitude today, as it’s Thanksgiving in the States. Even though we don’t have that celebration here, I feel like I do…because I read lots of newsletters and blogs from folks in the states! So I’m absorbing Thanksgiving by osmosis. I also think it’s a cool idea for a day – “eat loads of food and say thank you for stuff” as one of my American friends describes it. Sounds like my kind of day!
Anyway, on the radio today T.I featuring Rhianna “Live your Life” has been playing, which starts “Stop looking at what you ain’t got and start being thankful for what you do got.” Which gives me the perfect message really doesn’t it? Especially in tough times, it’s a really great practice to stop complaining about what we don’t have, and be thankful for what we do have. It reminds me of a Lenny Henry sketch in which he talks about a tribe who greet one another with ‘how are you? And your wife and family? And your goat?’ – and that’s it because that’s all they have.
Imagine if someone were to greet you with ‘How are you? And your husband and family? And your car? And your wardrobe full of clothes? And your 25 pairs of shoes? And your widescreen television? And your electric power shower? And your tinted moisturiser? And your laptop? And your 200 CD’s? And your fridge with it’s own ice-maker? And your 43 saucepans? And…’ You’d be there for HOURS! Days, even.
So for today, even if you’re not in a place that celebrates Thanksgiving, give thanks anyway for all that you have – not just the material possessions, but the love and friendship and joy that surrounds you. And I want to thank you for reading, and for giving me an audience to play to!

Life Lessons

What lessons is life trying to teach you right now? Are you receptive to learning? For years, life tried to teach me self-care – I wouldn’t listen until hit with Chronic Fatigue. Now life is trying to teach me patience (I wish life luck with that one!!!), and at least I am willing to listen, and notice that this lesson comes back again and again. And do you know what? I think I’m getting there…

A Marvelous Way to Waste Some Time!

Now you might think that with the website launch looming, I’d be frantically working on making sure everything is perfect and spending every spare moment thinking about it. Of course, you would be entirely wrong! Partly because my bizniz partner and I are meeting on Friday to go through the admin, so I’ll have the whole weekend to frantically work on making sure everything is perfect.
And partly because today I have been entirely distracted by the most WONDERFUL discovery! www.last.fm (UK only – there is a US version that I can’t remember)- online radio that you programme your favourite music into, and it not only plays you the music you love, but also reccommends other artists that you might enjoy. It’s BRILLIANT. Since putting in my likes I’ve listened to ALL music that I love. Amazing. BUT it is quite a distraction, because I keep going to look at the reccommendations, reading about these artists I’ve never heard of and adding them too.
And then I’m stopped in my tracks by a spectacular piece of music, or I’m turning up the volume to sing along, or I’m up and dancing. It’s a total distraction, and I love it!

OnTheBeach – Revealing the Sculpture

A note from Donna
Well, there is some enormously exciting news from camp ‘beach’ – a new website is about to be unveiled. Next Monday 1st December, I will give you the link to my NEW website so you can go along in your droves and have a look. It does mean that I have a week of messing about, changing my mind, creating pages, having new ideas and having a minor meltdown because, of course, perfection will be beyond me. And so it should be – as the Tears said ‘Imperfections are so beautiful’. ![]()
Revealing the Sculpture
Michelangelo said that a sculptor just chipped away at a stone to reveal the beauty within. This got me thinking – isn’t this what we all do with our lives? We hold a vision of the life we want and start chipping away to reveal that life…by getting the education we want, the job, the partner, the dog, the f’ing big television…and so on. But then somehow we lose sight of what it is we’re creating, or we forget that we are creating something, or we get discouraged and put down the chisel.
Then we sit looking at the unfinished block of marble that is our life, and we complain that it’s ugly and incomplete, missing key elements. We forget that there is a work of art hiding inside that incompleteness, and more importantly, we forget that we are the sculptor. Ok, let me just move metaphor aside for a moment and ask you a question. Are you consciously creating your life? Hmm…make that 2 questions. Do you have a vision you are working towards?
When we are young, naïve and foolish, we have dreams and ambitions we have no idea how to fulfil, and no fear about fulfilling them. A few setbacks, some discouragement and an amount of time later and we give up on our dreams, telling ourselves that we were young, naïve and foolish to think we could create a masterpiece in the first place. Well, I say BRING BACK youth, naivite and foolishness!
You don’t necessarily have to bring back your original dreams – speaking for myself, I no longer want the same kind of life I wanted when I was 18! The life I am now chipping away to reveal is very different from the one I initially envisioned. In fact, I had to get a new block of marble and start again with my life sculpture because the first attempt was just too darn small. You can pick up the chisel again any time you like…and much of the fun of sculpture is the process of creation – once you get the finished article, you’re off to the next after a moment of admiration.
Much like life. You have a vision of what you want, you stop to admire it for 30 seconds (maybe) and then you’re off to create the next work of art. Only in life, we often don’t stop to appreciate that creation process, or the initial design process. We don’t always keep an eye on whether our original vision has changed and whether we need a bigger chisel. The exciting thing is that whether you are aware of it or not, you are the artist, and your life is hiding in that block of marble, just waiting to be revealed.
Something to play with
What is the vision you have for your life? Don’t worry if it’s a bit unclear at the moment – the design process is delicious! Whatever stage you’re at – visualising your design, ready to pick up the chisel, half-way through chipping away – today resolve to remember that you are the creator of your life, and wield that chisel with pride and joy!

Chill Out

Time’s might be tough, there may be lots of things to worry about and fret about, but how does that fretfulness help you to survive the tough times? It doesn’t…it makes it even worse. Remember always that you are a resourceful, wonderful human being and you can cope with whatever life throws at you. And if you can relax, chill out, be laid back…the experience will be easier.

Love’s Labour’s Lost
November 18, 2008 by Donnaonthebeach
Last week I treated myself to a trip to Stratford to see Love’s Labour’s Lost. I had a standing ticket, but queued with the returns people to see if I could get a nice seat. This also turned into a fabulous experience! There were about a dozen of us (I was last!) to begin with and as you are waiting, you get chatting – the whole queue gets excited when a ticket becomes available, and there was a real sense of being in it together.
After chatting to the lady sat next to me for about half an hour, I was totally delighted for her when she got a ticket…even more pleased for her than I was for me! Next I got chatting to a couple of kids in the queue – the little boy was desperate to see it, and was devastated when he got a ticket, but was told he was too young to go into the auditorium alone. Bless him! At this point, a great ticket in the stalls came up for me, and away I went – pleased for me, but worried for him…and praying that a pair of tickets would come up so he could go in.
Luckily I got to see the end of that story, and he did get tickets for him and his dad – I hope he enjoyed it as much as he was looking forward to it! Anyway, the play itself was excellent – the first half was so much funnier than I expected, and at one point I found myself crying with laughter. The second half was the more usual gentle amusement which felt like a bit of a let-down after the hilarity of the first half, but was still excellent.
I’m still coming to terms with the idea that in the last 10 years I have changed from a lager-swilling club-monster to a culture vulture!!! Anyway, next Romeo and Juliet…I decided I’d treat myself again!!! This time it’s my Christmas present to myself! Can’t wait.
