The Astonishing Power of Emotion

The Astonishing Power of Emotion by Esther and Jerry Hicks is the simplest book I have ever seen on using the Law of Attraction. If you don’t know this “Law”, it basically states that like attracts like, so if you are being positive, you attract good stuff (and largely feel good!). The way to tell if you are ‘being positive’ is how you FEEL. You can be talking a good game, but still feeling angry, frustrated, sad and pessimistic.
The Astonishing Power of Emotion gives lots of examples of how we can turn ourselves “downstream” in any situation instead of fighting our way upstream, feeling bad and getting nowhere. The accompanying CD is amusing and will help you to put into practice this enormously simple tool of pivoting from feeling bad to feeling good. Whether you are a believer of such Universal Laws or not, this book is a wonderful companion for anyone who wants to feel good, be more positive, enjoy their life…and maybe even attract some good stuff!

Clear Your Clutter with Feng Shui: Space Clearing Can Change Your Life by Karen Kingston is one of those incredible books that inspire you to take action just by reading it. I confess, I am a clutter-holic! I have way too much stuff, and leave a trail of mayhem in my wake, but while reading Karen Kingston’s gentle, interesting and amusing book, I found myself naturally clearing my clutter – operating a ‘clear desk’ policy, getting rid of things that I don’t need or want, and looking for new ways to clear out my life. Ok, I’ve not turned into a shining example of the use of feng shui just yet…but I am getting there! If you’ve ever wanted to clear your clutter, get this book – you will find yourself doing it without the usual “right, roll up my sleeves” determination.

August 2008 Book Recommendation – Paulo Coelho

I recently re-read Paulo Coelho’s ‘The Alchemist’ and found it such a great read that I am now reading it a third time! A classic ‘quest tale’, it follows the fortunes of a shepherd who leaves his flock to go after his treasure. Chock full of references to ‘the soul of the world’, ‘omens’ and reminders to follow your dreams, this book is both a delightful story and an essential read to help you on your quest for treasure.
On this third read through, I’ve been using some of the many one-liners, like “There is a force that wants you to realise your destiny”, to journal my own thoughts on this ‘soul of the world’, these ‘omens’ and how the simple truths presented in this book apply to my quest. There’s probably not much in here you haven’t heard before, but I doubt you’ll have heard it in such a simple and easy to grasp storytelling style. Paulo Coelho embraces the truth that stories teach…and I am a willing pupil!

May 2008 Book Recommendation – In Praise of Slow

In Praise of Slow by Carl Honore. Life is such a fast paced ride these days – we have fast food, fast cars, fast internet connection (sometimes!) and there is never enough time to do everything you want to. The hectic pace of life ruins our enjoyment of so many things – food, leisure time, work, love. But does it have to be that way? Carl Honore and I say ‘no’. You can slow down your life. It’s a choice. You can choose to ‘take it easy’. You can choose to put your feet up and just watch the other headless chickens run round. And while you’re doing that, read ‘In Praise of Slow’!

March 2008 Book Recommendation – Journalution

Journalution by Sandy Grason. Have you ever kept a diary? Have you ever kept (or wanted to keep) a diary not just of your day to day life, but to connect with your inner wisdom? If not, and you are interested in accessing your inner wisdom (if you’re not, why not?!) by keeping a diary, check out Journalution by Sandy Grason. It’s a book about keeping a diary, or journalling – not only ideas on how and when (whatever works for you), also journalling prompts to get you moving. It’s a lovely book – Sandy’s style is friendly, warm and realistic – she knows life’s going to get in the way! I’ve been working with the journalling prompts for a couple of months, and I am loving the results already – my diary isn’t a moan about life anymore, it’s a place to dream, to find answers, and to have fun!
