What Do You Wish to Focus On?

Wishcasting Wednesday is here again.

What Do You Wish to Focus On?

Simply, those things with the most… The most power, the most energy, the most love, the most joy, the most life. I wish to focus on the things that will propel me forward into the life I wish for. Of late, I realise, I have been distracted by things that are not that important. My focus has been taken up by matters I cannot change and can only marginally affect. I wish to focus on those things that are mine to focus on. Those projects that I can bring into the world. Those things that bring me the most enjoyment. Those things that will most serve others. I wish to focus on what is important.

Joy. Love. Energy. Life.

OnTheBeach – Running on the Right Road

April 14, 2011 by

How are you? I hope you have been enjoying spring, and I hope spring is being kind to you. In England we had a few days of utterly glorious weather. I instantly dropped all plans to do anything else, and sat in the garden with a book for 2 and a half days. I’ve lived in this country a few years now and I know to make the most of great weather when you have it if you can. So I do. It’s worth remembering that you are in charge of your life, and if you want to enjoy good weather (or whatever else you wish to enjoy) you need to give yourself the permission and the time. If the world won’t end (and you won’t get sacked) if you stop and enjoy life for an hour, then stop and enjoy life!

For this week’s article, I dug into the archives and found an article I love from 2005. It’s still as relevant now, and was an interesting one for me to read – my road has again changed…and although it is 75% the right road, I need to find a way to get onto the 100% right road. Interesting how such an ‘old’ article can be so relevant isn’t it? It reminds me of one of my blog readers who goes to my website every day and if there is no new article, looks up an old one, using the site as a kind of oracle. She finds that more often than not the blog post she reads is very relevant to her on that day! Try it. Leave me a comment on the post you read to let me know what you think!

- Running on the Right Road -

“What’s the use of running when we are not on the right road?” – German proverb. You know how I love my road-based metaphors so I was delighted to find this quote…and it hits me right in the solar plexus. Fortunately, I am on the right road, but for many years I wasn’t and I still remember knowing that all my ‘running’ wouldn’t bring me the fulfilment I sought.

Even with this knowledge, it was 6 years before I realised that the way to find the right road was to stop and look round at the one I was on…then find the link roads to it. It’s like when you’re lost when you’re driving (or is that just me?) – you need to know where you are so you can figure out how to get to where you need to be.

And, as with real driving, there are signposts which either point you in the right direction or tell you you’re in the wrong place. For example, ever seen a sign on the M1 saying ‘London 100 miles’ when you wanted to be heading towards Leeds? (or is that just me too?) Often the signposts in your life aren’t quite as obvious, but they are there.

These signs are much easier to see when you stop running for a while and look around you. Are you where you want to be? Do you know where the road you are on will take you? Is that where you want to go? Will your hard work, or ‘running’ pay off? How? Is this going to bring you joy?

I often see people who are scared by the answers to these questions, because they think that if they are not going in the right direction, there will have to be huge upheaval. This is not necessarily so – just by knowing, you are a step ahead. Personally, I like huge upheaval but I can see that I could have achieved the same end with less disruption – it just would have taken longer.

Even if you’re on the right road, it’s worth stopping to check – I’ve recently discovered I was on a different road to the one I expected to be on right now. I am happy with it, and now I know about it I can work with it and make sure I still get to the right destination. So, are you on the right road?

- Something to Play With -

Book an hour this week in your diary to stop and look around at the road you are running on. Is it the right road? If so, celebrate! If not, celebrate! Well, now you know, you can decide to start looking for the right road to run on. To find out how coaching can help you find the right road to run on, contact me now. What Do I Wish To Read?

Wishcasting Wednesday is here again.

What Do I Wish To Read?

I have always been a bookworm. Give me a good book, a comfy chair and some sunshine and I will be happy for weeks! So what do I wish to read? As often happens with Jamie’s wishcasting prompts, my first answer was a little flippant…but then when I got to the juicy underlying answer – wow! First, to the flippant first answer – I wish to read all the books that are sat on my bookcase waiting to be read! Although I am a great believer that when you read is as important as what you read so I’m not too fussed about ticking all these books off the to-read list (I have read most of the books in this picture by the way – there’s only 20 or so unread books here).

There are hundreds more books in my ‘wishlist in my head’ that I would love to read…I’ll get to them one of these days. But now, onto the answer that sits underneath the flippant one. The answer that speaks of a long held dream that I rarely talk about. But now seems a good time, and here seems a good place to admit it to you. I wish to read the novels that I wrote. I haven’t written them yet. But I wish to read them. I always wanted to be an author, and it’s only in the last few years that I’ve thought it could be a possibility. I’ve written a non-fiction ebook, 100′s of articles and blog posts and although it may be immodest of me to say so, I always enjoy reading them again! So I wish to read my novels. (picture me now looking a bit shy and scared!)

Your Mission: Fall in Love with You

April 12, 2011 by

This week, your mission (should you choose to accept it) is to treat yourself as if you loved yourself beyond words. Treat yourself as you would a precious child that you want to spoil rotten! Treat yourself as if you thought you could do anything. Treat yourself as if you could do no wrong in your own eyes. Really fall in love with precious, gorgeous, wonderful you.

I love you…but it’s more important that you love you.

Don’t wait for the circumstances of your life to be ‘perfect’ before you’re happy, get happy now. How? By noticing the little stuff that makes you happy, and consciously enjoying yourself. So the next time you are in the bath, or enjoying a meal, or reading a book, or out with friends, notice your happy feelings and enjoy them!

Your Creative Joy

As you will know if you follow this blog closely (and if you do, I thank you!), on a Wednesday I answer a journal prompt from Jamie Ridler of Jamie Ridler Studios. I also listen to Jamie’s weekly podcast on creative living. Jamie is my favourite resource for awakening creativity, and since I came across her site sometime last year, I have steadily been letting out the reins on my own creativity.

I’ve been blogging for years now, so I’m quite happy with the written word as a creative pursuit, but other avenues have been pretty much closed as “I’m no good at” them. Jamie is helping me to remember that it’s not about getting it right, but about expressing your creativity and having fun with it. Many of us were shut down as kids when we tried something and someone else said it was rubbish. So we stopped doing it, even though we had fun. What a shame. Not only that we stopped having fun, but that we bottled up our creativity.

Many people believe they are not creative at all in any way, which I think is just bullshit. Everyone has a spark of creativity in them. Maybe you can’t paint like Picasso, or make music like Mozart, or write like William Shakespeare – but you can be creative in your own way. And I bet that there is some creativity in you that is crying out to be expressed. Expressing creativity is not about creating a masterpiece, it’s just about allowing your creative energy a chance to come out, to dance, to be joyously allowed.

Allowing your creativity a space to be expressed has several benefits. Firstly it’s FUN – remember that thing you used to do as a kid, just because it was fun? When did ‘because it’s fun’ stop being a good reason to do something in your life? Remind yourself of the joy of living by doing something JUST because it’s fun! Secondly, when you start to allow your creative energy to express, it gets stronger and you become MORE creative. And creativity is useful not just for finger painting or making pottery, but in business and in life – the more creative you are, the more easily you will find solutions for any problems you come across.

Thirdly, letting your creativity out makes you feel better – you feel less ‘stoppered up’ and choked, and you feel more free. Fourth, your creativity is part of YOU. Keeping it bottled up means that you are not fully being yourself. Letting it out allows you to be more of you. I’m not saying you have to have an art exhibition or do a music tour or make craftwork your new job. But maybe you want to think about the creative things you loved to do as a child and start doing them again. Not to ‘create art’ but just to express your creativity, have some fun, become more creative, feel good and be yourself.

I am all about creating a life you love, and creativity is a HUGE part of that. And there are so many creative endeavours that I am sure you can find something that captures your attention. Painting, drawing, knitting, sewing, crocheting, writing, sculpture, collage, photography, graphic design, pottery, jewelry-making, singing, dancing, playing an instrument, writing a song, acting… the list could go on for hours. By the way, do not make this hard for yourself. Don’t decide that you can’t do something because you don’t have the right equipment – be creative and do what you can with what you already have.

Leave me a comment and let me know what creative endeavour you’re going to try this week.
