Celebrating March

It’s the end of the month…what was GREAT about March? What lovely memories do you have of March? What was your favourite thing in March? What are you going to celebrate from this month and what celebrations are you going to do?

For me: My celebration is taking myself to the theatre to see some Shakespeare in April; I am celebrating spring being here (can’t tell you how happy that makes me!), and all the progress I’ve made in my business in the last month; and my favourite thing about March was my mom’s 60th birthday. We went off to Ireland for a family party and I have so many lovely memories of that whole week.

This is a great way to keep your focus on what’s working in your life, not just what sucked! I could easily answer the questions ‘what sucked about March; what bad memories to I have’ but what does that get me? I feel bad? I can moan and complain. Wooohoo…? Not. Whereas when I focus on what’s good, I can feel good, and realise that life is good and there is much to be thankful for. And from there, move into April feeling good about where this year is going. Instead of beating yourself up for all you haven’t done.

Give yourself the gift today of celebrating your life so far in 2011 – even if you don’t think you have ‘enough’ to celebrate (in fact ESPECIALLY if you don’t think you have much to celebrate) – celebrate what you do have, and I promise you that you will find more and more to celebrate as the year goes on.

How Do I Wish To Be Brave

Wishcasting Wednesday is here again.

How Do I Wish To Be Brave?

This week I had to ponder this question for a little while – it’s another one of those questions that initially made me shrink back. So the first way I wish to be brave is in answering these questions. And then the answer becomes similar to my answer last week about sparkling – I wish to be brave in every way. I wish to be brave in standing up for myself, my choices and for what I believe in. I wish to be brave in my business – to put what I do out in the world without worrying how it will be received. I wish to be brave in my life – courageously moving out into the world to create the life I want to live without fear or hesitation. I wish to be brave in being everything I am capable of being, and have as much fun as I am capable of having, so when I get to the end, I can say to myself ‘I had a good go at life’!

The Daily Constitutional

March 29, 2011 by

In The Independent a few years ago, John Walsh wrote about the pleasures we have lost because we’re usually in so much of a hurry. Here’s part of what he wrote:

“How long is it since you entertained the concept of Going For A Walk? I don’t mean the urgent dash to the shops on Saturday afternoon, or the purposeful not-quite-run on the common in your expensive trainers. I mean the purposeless amble through the backstreets of your fashionable suburb, taking in the sights, peering through windows (but don’t push your luck) and greeting neighbours with a cheery doffing of one’s Homburg. The lack of any actual goal, other than getting out of the house and seeing what the world is up to, is what gives the random constitutional its old-fashioned charm.”

It’s as true today as it was then. When was the last time you had a good mooch around for no purpose at all? I get to mooch on a daily basis because my dog needs walking…so there is a purpose…but I still do it as a nice gentle mooch. This week (when the skies have been clear) I’ve been mooching to the top of the hill across the road and watching the sunset. Now I know I said ‘mooch for no purpose at all’, but as reasons to mooch go, this one is hard to beat!

Go mooching.

Irish Blessings

To celebrate St Patrick’s Day, here’s a selection of my favourite Irish Blessings.

May your home always be too small to hold all your friends.
God is good, but never dance in a small boat.
(No, I have no idea either, but it made me smile!)

<3 <3 <3

May you live as long as you want,
And never want as long as you live.

<3 <3 <3

May your pockets be heavy and your heart be light,
May good luck pursue you each morning and night,

<3 <3 <3

As you slide down the banister of life,
May the splinters never point in the wrong direction!

What Do You Wish For the World

What Do You Wish For the World

I was thinking about this prompt, waiting for profound thoughts to hit, when the loving kindness meditation came to mind:

May the world be filled with loving kindness
May the world be well
May the world be peaceful and at ease
May the world be happy
May the world be free of suffering

I think that says it all. Get involved on Jamie’s blog, or leave a comment here. As you wish for yourself, I wish for you also.

Difficult and Impossible are Two Different Things

March 14, 2011 by

I just watched Helen Skelton’s high wire walk at Battersea Station for Comic Relief (watch the highlights here or go to the bbc iplayer for the full program). She walked a tightrope suspended between the chimneys at Battersea Power Station 492 feet in the air. Shudder. I could barely watch, so fair play to her for actually doing this on a windy, rainy March day. But it wasn’t really the feat itself I wanted to blog about today, it was something she said in the documentary.

Difficult and Impossible are Two Different Things

How often have you dismissed something as ‘impossible’? What have you decided is impossible for you? And is it really impossible, or just difficult? I am a big fan of making life easy, not making life more difficult than it needs to be, but sometimes when talking to people about following their dreams in life, it ain’t always easy. Sometimes it is difficult. When I travelled round Australia on my own, it wasn’t always easy. The past 7 years of having my own business has not always been easy.

I would never advise making life harder for yourself than it needs to be…but sometimes to get to where you want to be, you have to remind yourself that difficult and impossible are two different things. Many things that we have decided are ‘impossible’ aren’t. They’re just difficult. And the thing about difficult is that it gets easier! Impossible stays impossible forever (or at least until we find out it’s not impossible at all – I’m thinking the sub-4-minute mile which many believed was physically impossible). But difficult? Well, when I started driving it was difficult. Now it’s not. When I started writing blogs and articles it was difficult. Now it’s not. When I started using Twitter and Facebook they were difficult! Now they’re not.

Don’t confuse difficult with impossible, and don’t worry about difficult. Just keep on keeping on, and it will become easy. And then of course, you will find the next difficult challenge because you’ll find that it is fabulous fun to turn difficult into easy!

7 Spiritual Laws of Success

March 10, 2011 by

It’s a while since I’ve done a recommendation, but this book (and the DVD that I got last week) has prompted (or synchronistically coincided with…) quite a shift for me. The link I’ve put here is for a little pocketbook version – there may be fuller versions if you like lots of information. I must admit that when I received it about 2 years ago, I did think ‘is that it’ because it was small. I read it, pondered, put it on my bookshelf and forgot all about it.

And then a few weeks ago, I was reminded of one of the 7 spiritual laws and I pulled the book out again for another look. This go around it is profoundly affecting me, so much so that I went and ordered the DVD, and I am actually practicing the actions they suggest for each ‘law’. It is worth remembering that sometimes the ‘when’ you read is just as important as the ‘what’ you read. So if you’re struggling through a book, consider putting it aside for awhile until you feel called to try again. You may find, as I did, that something which seemed a bit ‘ho hum’ is actually wonderful and helps you to shift to a new level in your life.

Right, off to practice ‘the law of detachment’ (I always had trouble with this one!).
