Why Should You Be Able to Do Something You’ve Never Done Before?

It’s interesting to me how often I have conversations with people that go along these lines – “oh I could never do that thing you do, I’m rubbish at (whatever it is) and you’re so good” to which I invariably reply “Well, I couldn’t do it either when I first started”. Competence in anything – whether it’s writing, making video, speaking in public, driving, operating a piece of technological wizardry – is often more a measure of how much practice someone has had than how brilliant they are.

Of course there are people who are natural geniuses, and are born able to walk, talk, ride a bike, program a video (hehehe)…oh no, there aren’t. Everyone has to learn how to do everything. I will allow that some people do have an affinity for a particular area which makes it easier for them to pick it up – some of us find writing easy, some find driving easy, some find cooking easy, some find running easy, some find predictive text easy…and the list goes on ad infinitum.

The Water Slide of Change

Change is inevitable in life – do you welcome it, or resist it furiously? Change can be quite scary, but if you can go with it you might enjoy the ride. I like to think of it like this: imagine a water slide as a metaphor for change in life. You are at the top, and you will end up at the bottom – you will either go quickly, whooping with exhilaration, or slowly, clinging desperately to the sides until your shoulders are ready to pop! Could you let go and enjoy the ride?

A Little Kindness Goes a Long Way

So, another bereavement…that’s 7 people I know who’ve died in the last 18 months. I wonder if the Grim Reaper is on overtime? Anyway, once again I’ve been struck by the kindness of my newsletter readers, friends and family. So many people have been in touch to give their sympathies and to offer a little kindness. People often say to me that they don’t think they make a difference in this world (because they’re not running the entire universe!), but the difference you make is more profound than you think.

Just by sending an e-mail, making a call, giving a kind word or gesture you could be making a world of difference to one person. And that difference might just mean the world to somebody. I would like to say thank you from the bottom of my heart – each of those messages I received helped me to feel just a little less alone and down. Those moment of kindness profoundly affected me, and the people behind them didn’t even need to move the world 3 inches to the left!

Be aware always that you do have a huge impact on the world you live in and the people you share with, and that small, random act of kindness which you think nothing of is being received with love and gratitude.
