Life Lessons

November 26, 2008 by

What lessons is life trying to teach you right now? Are you receptive to learning? For years, life tried to teach me self-care – I wouldn’t listen until hit with Chronic Fatigue. Now life is trying to teach me patience (I wish life luck with that one!!!), and at least I am willing to listen, and notice that this lesson comes back again and again. And do you know what? I think I’m getting there…

A Marvelous Way to Waste Some Time!

November 25, 2008 by

Now you might think that with the website launch looming, I’d be frantically working on making sure everything is perfect and spending every spare moment thinking about it. Of course, you would be entirely wrong! Partly because my bizniz partner and I are meeting on Friday to go through the admin, so I’ll have the whole weekend to frantically work on making sure everything is perfect.

And partly because today I have been entirely distracted by the most WONDERFUL discovery! www.last.fm (UK only – there is a US version that I can’t remember)- online radio that you programme your favourite music into, and it not only plays you the music you love, but also reccommends other artists that you might enjoy. It’s BRILLIANT. Since putting in my likes I’ve listened to ALL music that I love. Amazing. BUT it is quite a distraction, because I keep going to look at the reccommendations, reading about these artists I’ve never heard of and adding them too.

And then I’m stopped in my tracks by a spectacular piece of music, or I’m turning up the volume to sing along, or I’m up and dancing. It’s a total distraction, and I love it!

Chill Out

November 22, 2008 by

Time’s might be tough, there may be lots of things to worry about and fret about, but how does that fretfulness help you to survive the tough times? It doesn’t…it makes it even worse. Remember always that you are a resourceful, wonderful human being and you can cope with whatever life throws at you. And if you can relax, chill out, be laid back…the experience will be easier.

Love’s Labour’s Lost

November 18, 2008 by

Last week I treated myself to a trip to Stratford to see Love’s Labour’s Lost. I had a standing ticket, but queued with the returns people to see if I could get a nice seat. This also turned into a fabulous experience! There were about a dozen of us (I was last!) to begin with and as you are waiting, you get chatting – the whole queue gets excited when a ticket becomes available, and there was a real sense of being in it together.

After chatting to the lady sat next to me for about half an hour, I was totally delighted for her when she got a ticket…even more pleased for her than I was for me! Next I got chatting to a couple of kids in the queue – the little boy was desperate to see it, and was devastated when he got a ticket, but was told he was too young to go into the auditorium alone. Bless him! At this point, a great ticket in the stalls came up for me, and away I went – pleased for me, but worried for him…and praying that a pair of tickets would come up so he could go in.

Luckily I got to see the end of that story, and he did get tickets for him and his dad – I hope he enjoyed it as much as he was looking forward to it! Anyway, the play itself was excellent – the first half was so much funnier than I expected, and at one point I found myself crying with laughter. The second half was the more usual gentle amusement which felt like a bit of a let-down after the hilarity of the first half, but was still excellent.

I’m still coming to terms with the idea that in the last 10 years I have changed from a lager-swilling club-monster to a culture vulture!!! Anyway, next Romeo and Juliet…I decided I’d treat myself again!!! This time it’s my Christmas present to myself! Can’t wait.

OnTheBeach – Share Your Gift

November 17, 2008 by

We all have gifts that we can share with the world, and one of the greatest tragedies is that we don’t. We keep ourselves small, we are self-deprecating and lack 100% self belief – and the world loses. You think I’m exaggerating? Well, let’s forget about this ‘just’ being about you for a minute, and think of everyone you know. How many of them are sharing their gifts with the world? Now think about the people that you don’t know, and the impact of all these people not sharing their gifts…trust me, the world loses.

The world is a slightly less shiny happy place without your gifts…and without the gifts of hundreds of thousands of people, well you can see the darkness creeping in. We all have many gifts, and our ability to share them is often blocked because we can’t see how wonderful we are! The good news is that you don’t necessarily need to realise how amazing you are when you begin.

Most of the authors, coaches, leaders that I admire still don’t appreciate just how fantastic they are, and when they started, for many of them their biggest challenge was to overcome their lack of self belief! Are you really so different from them? I love getting compliments from readers and clients – but what I know that they don’t always is that they are just as capable as me of sharing their gifts with the world. No one person is ‘better than’ another – we are all fabulous, some of us just don’t realise it yet!

So how do you find your gifts, if you have no idea how talented and amazing you are? Start looking for things that you enjoy doing, things that other people seek you out for, things that you do without really thinking. You may be a fabulous listener, a good ‘solutions’ person, very positive, very funny, good at telling jokes, good at practical things, good at fixing things, good with kids, a terrific flirt ;-) Start small – start with day to day, “little things” that make a big difference – think of the little things others do that make you feel good – a smile, a kind word, a silly joke – each of these things is a gift.

Look beyond ‘nothing’ to find your gifts – trust me, you have MANY. How do I know that you are not the only person in the world that has no gift? Because I know that no one on this planet is devoid of gifts. I know that within each and every one of us is a shining bundle of magnificence just bursting to get out! And I know that until you can find your gifts and let them out into the world, you will always feel that you could do more, be more. And you can!

Something to play with
Your mission, should you choose to accept it, is twofold. Number one, find something you are good at, and share it. Number two, find something that someone else is good at, and tell them that they are wonderful. If this twofold mission feels good, rinse and repeat.

Hold Your Dreams Gently

November 13, 2008 by

Our dreams, goals and ambitions are enormously important to us, so sometimes we hold on too tight and burst the bubble! Treat your dreams as the precious, fragile things that they are. Don’t expose them to criticism too early from cynics, and believe in them. If you have the dream, you have all you need to achieve it…even if you’re not sure how!
